Farming in Spring
Bringing the land back to life after winter
Spring is here!
As winter fades and the days begin to lengthen, spring marks one of the busiest and most exciting times on the farm. After months of colder weather, the focus shifts back to planting, field preparation and the first signs of new growth.
Preparing the land
Spring is a crucial period for preparing the soil for the year ahead. Fields are carefully cultivated and drilled with a variety of crops, including barley, sugar beet, maize, millet, and canary seed. These crops will later play an important role in producing high-quality bird seed mixes.
New Life in the Fields
In the vegetable fields, the new season begins to take shape. Early crops are planted and nurtured, with the aim of supplying the farm shop later in the year. As temperatures rise and daylight increases, these young plants begin to establish themselves, bringing the farm back to life after the quieter winter months.
From early April, we start to pick our wonderful asparagus and rhubarb – one of the first true signs that the season is underway.
A Season of Activity
Spring not only transforms the fields, but also brings fresh energy to the surrounding countryside. Birds return to nest, wildlife becomes more visible and the landscape shifts from winter browns to vibrant greens as crops begin to grow.
